There is something incredibly effortless about Max Jury’s latest release. The Iowa singer-songwriter impressed last year with the beautifully refined piano ballad “Great America Novel”; complete with heart-tugging strings, the track aligned the young talent with likes of Tobias Jesso Jr. Now, the Marathon-signed balladeer has unveiled the first taste of his self-titled, debut full-length due 3rd June, and it’s a stunner. Jury’s vocal paints the lovelorn picture, juxtaposing warm layers of organ, gospel-choir backing - a tool which carries the song throughout - and a silky, soulful bass line with the call and response refrain “I am numb”. It’s another gorgeous, assured look at what’s to come from this impressive American songwriter. -G.O'B
